For cakers though, creating comic cakes can be quite a demanding task - although they are not technically hard to tackle, they do need some patience, as the decorating part is a time-consuming process.

So let’s take a step-by-step look at how to make a comic cake:

  1. Choose a design: There are lots of designs for comic cakes - some of the most frequently seen are a cake slice design, kawaii design or a vintage drip cake design. But why not try out something totally new. You can find lots of inspiration from the Internet and plenty of video tutorials on Youtube too.

  2. Prepare the cake: Bake and layer a cake in the flavour, size and shape that you desire. Any type of cake is fine, as long as you can apply icing on it.

  3. Apply the base icing: Apply a light-coloured (usually white or some pastel shade) base layer of icing to the cake. You can use either fondant or buttercream, but we’d recommend fondant to achieve a more clear-cut effect.

  4. Apply the design: Create the desired design with coloured frosting. Again, you can choose between fondant or buttercream. If you go for the buttercream, you can apply it using a piping bag or a small spatula. Use bright colours that are typically used in comic books.

  5. Add accents: Use fondant or gum paste to create some accents, like text bubbles, candles, cherries for the cake. These little details really add the right touch to the whole appearance of your comic cake.

  6. Create the outlines: Black outlines are the defining characteristic of a comic cake that actually create the 2D effect. You can either use thin rolled black fondant “cables” or use black buttercream in a piping bag with a small round tip to create the outlines of the design on the cake. Be sure to line every border: the top, sides, layers, icing drips, candles and other accents, centre lines, etc.

  7. Add finishing touches: Add any finishing touches, such as edible glitter or sprinkles.
